Bob & Carol's Ministry:
Bob and Carol met while students at Philadelphia Bibilcal University and were married in 1969. They both graduated with a degree in Bible and Christian Education. After Bob & Carol graduated from PBU, they worked with Youth For Christ - Campus Life. In 1978 Bob became pastor of Niemond's Independent Church in Richfield, PA. Sensing the call of God to serve Him in establishing churches in South American, they joined SIM in 1985. After a year of language school in Costa Rica, they served as church planters, first assigned to Bolivia and since 1992 to Paraguay. A special emphasis of ministry in both countries was reaching out to urban professionals. During 1997-2000 Bob & Carol served as the SIM Mid West Great Lakes Regional Directors. In May of 2000 they returned to Paraguay to continue their Church Planting ministry. Since 2005 until the present thir focus is on establishing a local church and school in the rural provincial capitol in Villarrica.
During their time in Cochabamba, Bolivia they developed an intercultural exchange program to help reach into middle and upper class families. They also worked helping establish a local church which worked with this class as well. They moved to Asuncion, Paraguay in January 1992 where they continued reaching out to the people through the Salt & Light Exchange program. They discipled university students through this student ministry. Christian English-speaking students were placed in Paraguayan homes and Paraguayan and Bolivian students are sent to live in Christian US homes for extended home stay experiences. Folks were exposed to the gospel through natural normal family living. Throughout the years, the Givens were involved in church nurturing, men's and women's discipleship studies, seeker Bible studies, and friendship evangelism. Bob served as the personnel director, giving pastoral care to the SIM Paraguay team during their ministry years based in Asuncion. Carol administered the SIM Paraguay guest house where together they gave missionary care to the SIM Paraguay ministry families. They transferred to Villarrica in Dec., 2005.
Bob and Carol have covered a variety of short term assignments during their ministry years with SIM. Bob has served as Acting Area Director of SIM (Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay). The Givens pastored a church for a year while covering for a missionaries Home Assignment in the city of Fernando de la Mora. Carol covered the business manager and treasures position during another missionary's home assignment. Through this time the primary focus was on discovery Bible studies and men's and women's discipleship ministries.
Since moving to Villarrica the Givens are establishing a local church and training a strong local leadership base. They also are helping establish the growing Christian school. Carol currently serves as the acting general director while covering for the general director's Home Assignment year in Canada. Bob serves as the chaplain of the school. They both are on the board of directors of teh school.
Bob’s greatest joy is helping form leaders in the Church ministry. Challenges are many but the Lord is using these ministries to establish a strong base throughout the rural province of Guaira, Paraguay.
The Givens feel extremely fulfilled and at times exhausted in their ministry assignment. But God is at work and they see daily indications of His blessing on their lives and ministry.
